Secretary Clinton Releases Annual Human Rights Reports

Washington, DC
Thursday, May 24, 2012

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton released the 2011 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices. The annual report examines the status of human rights in countries around the world. Secretary Clinton said 2011 has been both a “tumultuous and momentous” year as she spoke about recent developments in human rights in Burma and in the Middle East, as Egyptians vote in their first free presidential election this week.

She also denounced Syria’s government, calling the Assad regime an “assault on the very lives of its citizens” and noting that the Syrian people “know they deserve a better. “ At today’s briefing, we hear from Secretary Clinton and then from Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Michael Posner.
