Secretary Geithner Testifies on the International Financial System

Washington, DC
Tuesday, March 20, 2012

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner appears at a full committee hearing of the House Financial Services Committee on the state of the international financial system.

The Treasury Secretary is required by law to appear before the Committee every year to report on major issues affecting U.S. participation in international financial institutions and U.S. efforts to reform the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Secretary Geithner will likely address the European debt crisis and how it affects the U.S.

In January, Chairman Spencer Bachus and other Republicans committee members wrote to Secretary Geithner opposing increased contributions to the IMF for the purpose of alleviating the European debt crisis.

Secretary Geithner indicated last month at a G-20 meeting that the U.S. did not intend to make additional IMF contributions for that purpose. The IMF meets in April for more talks on Europe and other issues.
