Matt Bevin, who identifies with the libertarian-leaning Tea Party, intends to challenge Sen. McConnell in the Republican primary.
Alison Ludergan Grimes, currently Kentucky's Secretary of State, and Ed Marksberry are running in the Democratic primary.
The Kentucky Senate race got a lot of attention earlier this year after Actress Ashley Judd dipped her toe into the race to unseat the minority leader. She later decided not to run. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has targeted Sen. McConnell as potentially vulnerable.
The junior Senator from Kentucky, Sen. Rand Paul (R), has been mentioned as a potential 2016 Republican Presidential Candidate. His 2010 election exposed divisions in the Kentucky Republican party that the Democrats hope to use to their advantage.
