Senate Cmte. on Aging Examines Unemployment of Older Workers

Washington, DC
Tuesday, May 15, 2012

The Senate Special Committee on Aging, chaired by Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.) held a hearing to address unemployment among older workers.

Committee members heard testimony from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) Director of Education, Workforce, and Income Security Charles Jeszeck on a new report on how the employment status of older workers has changed since the recession. The report also examines financial risks from long-term unemployment, challenges in finding new jobs, what additional policies might help and what the Department of Labor has done to help older workers.

Additionally, Joe Carbone, the president and CEO of The WorkPlace organization, testified on how his Connecticut-based program successfully helps older workers find new jobs.

The Committee also heard from Philadelphia native Sheila Whitelaw, an unemployed worker, who will discuss the challenge of finding work as a result of the economy.
