The Communicators

Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) on Online Piracy

Communicators: Senator Wyden

Washington, DC
Saturday, December 31, 2011

On "The Communicators," Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), discusses legislation to combat online piracy. Wyden says two proposals, including SOPA, the Stop Online Privacy Act, goes to far. He says SOPA would damage the domain name system - the basic architecture of the internet- would be compromised, it would harm efforts at cybersecurity and it would lead to censorship.

Senator Wyden and House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chair Darrell Issa (R-CA) are working together on an alternative bill that cuts off the money sources, including visa and Paypal, for piracy violators.

Sandra Aistars joins the program via phone to discuss her opposition to the Wyden-Issa proposal and instead supports bills by Senate and House Judiciary Committee Chairs Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Representative Lamar Smith (R-TX).

"The Communicators" airs Saturday at 6:30 pm ET on C‑SPAN and Monday at 8 am and 8 pm ET on C‑SPAN 2.
