Senators Hear About Hiring of Veterans by Government Contractors

Washington, DC
Tuesday, June 5, 2012

The head of a major veterans’ employment website said that the Labor Department has “bureaucrats sitting on their butts” instead of helping veterans find jobs.

Ted Daywalt, President and CEO of VetJobs, was testifying at a hearing looking into the employment of veterans by government contractors. Senate Contracting Oversight Subcommittee Chair Claire McCaskill (D-MO) opened the hearing with criticism that there is still no accurate accounting of the number of veterans employed by government contractors.

Chairman McCaskill requested an update from the Department of Labor employment based on data collected from form VETS-100A,  required of contractors receiving at least $100,000 in government contracts. Under federal law, companies with government contracts are required to promote employment opportunities for qualified veterans.

The Subcommittee is concerned about the accuracy of data submitted and whether or not the Labor Department is providing proper oversight on the reporting process.

Witnesses included: Ted Daywalt, President and CEO, VetJobs; Spencer Kympton, Chief Operating Officer, The Mission Continues; Ramsey Sulayman, Legislative Associate, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America; Pamela Hardy, Senior Manager, Diversity and Inclusion Team, Booz Allen Hamilton; and Sally Sullivan, Executive Vice President, ManTech International Corp.
