Sens. McCain (R-AZ), Schumer (D-NY) Discuss Immigration Plans

Washington, DC
Wednesday, January 30, 2013

Senator Chuck Schumer and Senator John McCain revealed additional details on a bipartisan effort to address the nation’s immigration issues including what could rail road the bill that is still in its early stages of language formulation. Senator McCain believes adding LGBT protections will only endanger support. Senator Schumer stressed that the possibility has not been discussed. McCain and Schumer agree that majority support from both parties and in both chambers is crucial. In the Senate, they want 80 votes.

The Senators were featured speakers at Wednesday's Politico Playbook Breakfast with Chief White House Correspondent Mike Allen.

The effort and bill framework was unveiled Monday by the group of Senators referred to as the new “Gang of 8” on immigration. In addition to McCain and Schumer, the remaining 6 Senators are; Florida Senator Marco Rubio,  South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, Colorado Senator Michael Bennet, Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez and Arizona Senator Jeff Flake.
