Shelby County, AL v. Holder Supreme Court Oral Argument

Washington, DC
Wednesday, February 27, 2013

The Supreme Court heard oral argument Wednesday on a key provision in the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965. The Court will decide if Section 5 of the Act has outlived its purpose and imposes an undue burden on states that are subject to federal supervision under the law. Section 5 requires certain states, mainly in the South, get approval from the Justice Department or the DC District Court before changing any voting laws. The case is Shelby County, Alabama v. Holder.
