State Dept. Official Discusses Counterterrorism

Washington, DC
Tuesday, December 18, 2012

U.S. Department of State Coordinator for Counterterrorism Daniel Benjamin recently gave a progress report on American counterterrorism at the Brookings Institution.

He spoke about global trends in terrorism, including the potential for Pakistan to become an exporter of extremism and for Syria to become a further breeding ground.

Then, Bruce Riedel, former advisor to President Obama on Afghanistan-Pakistan policy, discussed his own thoughts on American counterterrorism efforts. He is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and the author of "Deadly Embrace: Pakistan, America, and the Future of Global Jihad."

Daniel Byman, senior fellow and research director of the Brookings institution Saban Center for Middle East Policy, moderated the discussion.
