The Civil War: Remembering Charles Sumner

Washington, DC
Saturday, June 25, 2011

Senator Charles Sumner was a political figure from Massachusetts who became a prominent abolitionist and supporter of human rights.

Despite having  served in the Senate for twenty-three years, he is remembered today by the beating he suffered at the hands of Representative Preston Brooks on the Senate floor in 1856.  The Massachusetts Historical Society presented a program based on letters from Sumner at various stages in his life.
