The Communicators with Steve DelBianco, Joe Crosby & Jerome Horton

Washington, DC
Saturday, October 20, 2012

This week on The Communicators, Steve Delbianco, Executive Director for NetChoice, Joe Crosby, Consultant for Retail Industry Leaders Association and Jerome Horton, Chairman for California State Board of Equalization.  The guests discuss the debate over whether goods purchased online should be taxed. Recently, the State of California began requiring internet merchants to collect a sales tax on purchases.  Other cash-strapped states are moving to enact similar taxation methods.

The National Governors Association and the Retail Industry Leaders Association have offered support for a uniform national internet sales tax, with several members of Congress proposing variations on the legislation – including Senators Dick Durbin and Mike Enzi, and Representatives Jackie Speier and Steve Womack.

A national law would overturn a 1992 Supreme Court decision blocking states from collecting taxes on retailers that don't have a physical presence in their states.
