The LBJ Tapes: Election Day 1964

Washington, DC
Saturday, August 18, 2012

As the C-SPAN networks continue to cover the Road to the White House 2012, C-SPAN Radio brings you a special program of President Lyndon Johnson’s calls about the 1964 election.  These calls took place on November 3rd, the day of the election and on November 4th.

You’ll hear the election returns come in, both in the presidential and some of the key congressional races, and LBJ and his advisers discussing the  reasons for the wins and losses.

Participants in these calls include key White House aides, LBJ’s running mate, Minnesota Democratic Senator Hubert Humphrey, incumbent and incoming members of congress, including Massachusetts Democratic senator Edward Kennedy and his brother Robert, the apparent winner in the New York Senate race, and Connecticut Democratic Senator Thomas Dodd, whose son, Christopher, would also become a senator.

Audio and information for this program comes from the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum.
