Housing Secretary Shaun Donovan and Craig Fugate, head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in charge of the storm relief efforts, testify Wednesday before a Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on the response and recovery following Hurricane Sandy.
Wednesday’s hearing before the Senate Appropriations' Homeland Security Subcommittee was FEMA Administrator Fugate’s second appearance on Capitol Hill this week regarding FEMA’s plan for redevelopment in those areas affected by the late October hurricane. Lawmakers are also looking at lessons learned from other states impacted by previous disasters.
On Tuesday, Fugate joined state emergency officials at a House Transportation Committee hearing to examine the recover efforts to states impacted by Hurricane Sandy.
The House recently passed H.R. 2903, the FEMA Reauthorization Act of 2012, sponsored by Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management Subcommittee Chairman Jeff Denham (R-CA) . The bill includes reforms that will reduce costs and speed up recovery following a disaster.
