A look back to October, 1988 when Vice President George H. W. Bush and the Democratic candidate for President, Michael Dukakis, faced off in their second presidential debate.  A group of panelists, including Bernard Shaw of CNN, asked questions to which the candidates had two minutes to respond. This debate was held at the University of California-- Los Angeles.

Precisely four weeks before Election Day, Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) & Sen. John McCain met in Nashville, TN, for the second presidential debate. The Town Hall format debate was moderated by NBC's Tom Brokaw, with questions from a group of uncommitted voters in the audience and via e-mails.

With Election Day nearing, Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) & Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) met for the third and final presidential debate to discuss domestic and economic policy. CBS chief Washington correspondent Bob Schieffer moderated the event from Hofstra Univ. in Hempstead, NY.

1960 Kennedy - Nixon Presidential Debate

On September 26th 1960, presidential candidates Senator John F. Kennedy and Vice President Richard M. Nixon participated in the first-ever televised presidential candidates’ debate. Several people who were directly involved, including Don Hewitt, Howard K. Smith, Ted Sorensen and Herbert Klein, describe the historic debate. This discussion was held in the same location, Studio 1 of WBBM TV-Chicago, as the Kennedy-Nixon debate.

In this program from our 1999 "American Presidents: Life Portraits" series we focused on James Garfield's life and career. Historians discussed Garfield's military service, his election as president and assassination shortly after his inauguration. Suzanne Miller, the site manager at Garfield's home in Mentor, Ohio, talked about several of the artifacts and documents that Garfield left behind.
