Thirty years ago, Ronald Reagan delivered a speech on states rights at the Neshoba County Fair in Mississippi. The speech generated controversy in that it was seen as an illustration of the Republican Party’s southern strategy towards racial politics at the time. The Organization of American Historians convened a panel on the speech in Washington recently.
