Discussion on Afghanistan After 2014 U.S. Troop Withdrawal

The former U.S. Ambassador to European Union, the former Afghan Ambassador to the U.S., and the former Foreign Secretary of Pakistan Wednesday took part in a panel discussion in Washington on the future of Afghanistan. The defense policy leaders examined the current state of Afghanistan and the next phase leading up to and after the 2014 withdrawal of most U.S. and coalition combat forces. In remarks at the Atlantic Council, panelists also discussed regional security, including the role of regional players like Pakistan, economic engagement, and political uncertainties facing Afghanistan.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai is in Washington this week for meetings with President Obama and other senior administration officials. He is expected to meet President Obama on Friday at the White House.

The former Afghan Ambassador to the James Dobbins, U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan from 2001-2002, was responsible for re-establishing the American embassy in Kabul after it was closed in 1989.

Ambassador Riaz Mohammad Khan was the Foreign Secretary of Pakistan from 2005-2008. Ambassador Said Jawad served as Afghan Ambassador to the United States from 2003-2010. They were joined by Franklin Kramer, distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council.
