This program was produced by the Republican National Committee in support of Dwight Eisenhower’s 1952 presidential campaign, and aired on national TV the evening before Election Day. Dwight Eisenhower went on to defeat Democratic candidate Adlai Stevenson that year.

American History TV continues to reair C-SPAN's history series “The Contenders,” which features profiles of key figures who ran for president and lost, but changed political history. This week, we focus on the life and career of Adlai Stevenson. He came from a long line of political figures. His grandfather, Adlai Stevenson I was Vice President during President Grover Cleveland’s second term, his maternal great-grandfather was Abraham Lincoln’s Campaign Manager and his father was Secretary of State of Illinois. After serving one term as Governor of Illinois, Stevenson tried to do what no one in his family had attempted--to become President. He tried twice, in 1952 and 1956, but lost both times to Dwight Eisenhower.

Dwight Eisenhower served a long military career before being elected the nation's 34th president in 1952. "The Dwight D. Eisenhower Story" was a 1953 episode of The Big Picture series produced by the Army Pictorial Center, and tells the story of Eisenhower's life before becoming president. Introduced by Sergeant Stuart Queen, the film was narrated by Raymond Massey.

In this program from our 1999 "American Presidents: Life Portraits" series we focused on James Garfield's life and career. Historians discussed Garfield's military service, his election as president and assassination shortly after his inauguration. Suzanne Miller, the site manager at Garfield's home in Mentor, Ohio, talked about several of the artifacts and documents that Garfield left behind.

Thousands of colonists rejected the War for American Independence and many fled to the British stronghold of New York City. San Jose State University History Professor Ruma Chopra discusses the situation in the city and the perspective of those who looked upon the British as natural allies in religion, language and blood and thought the violence of rebellion was unnecessary and unlawful.
