Encore Q&A: Simon Winchester

Simon Winchester talks about his sweeping historical narrative of the Atlantic Ocean, "Atlantic: Great Sea Battles, Heroic Discoveries, Titanic Storms, and a Vast Ocean of a Million Stories," He details his cross-country replication of the transcontinental motor convoy Dwight Eisenhower volunteered for in 1919 that later prompted President Eisenhower’s interstate highway system proposal. He also talks about his career as a reporter, freelance writer and author, and describes his July 4, 2011, naturalization ceremony on the deck of the USS Constitution in Boston Harbor. He shares his writing and research habits, along with future projects.

Simon Winchester graduated from Oxford with a degree in geology. He worked as a foreign correspondent for the Guardian and the Sunday Times of London, and has authored over 21 books. He lives in the Berkshires in Massachusetts.

Erik Larson is the author of the historical narrative, "In the Garden of Beasts," which details the life of William E. Dodd. Dodd became America’s first ambassador to Adolf Hitler’s Germany in Berlin during 1933. The story follows Dodd and his family, including daughter Martha, as they interact with Joseph Goebbels, Hermann Goring and other top level members of the Third Reich during the years leading up to World War II. The book chronicles Martha’s relationships with various authors including Carl Sandburg and Thomas Wolfe, as well as high-ranking Germans. It also tells the story of Ambassador Dodd’s growing frustration with America’s lack of action against the Third Reich. Erik Larson has authored three New York Times bestsellers, including "The Devil in the White City," and "Isaac’s Storm." Larson was a staff writer for the Wall Street Journal, and a contributing writer for Time Magazine. He has written articles for The Atlantic, Harper’s, The New Yorker, and other publications.

In his book about the presidential transition period of Abraham Lincoln, Mr. Holzer traces Lincoln's actions in the four months between his 1860 election and his inauguration: a period when seven states seceded from the Union. Harold Holzer, co-chairman of the U.S. Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and vice chairman of the Lincoln Forum, has authored, co-authored, or edited over 30 books on the Lincoln era. This interview was conducted in the lobby of Washington's historic Willard Hotel, where President-elect Lincoln and his family resided in the days leading up to the 1861 inauguration.

Melvin Urofsky talks about his book, Louis D. Brandeis: A Life . Louis Brandeis was 59 years old when he was named to the U.S. Supreme Court by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. Prior to that he had been instrumental in the development of the Federal Reserve and the Federal Trade Commission. Professor Urofsky discussed Justice Brandeis' early years in Louisville and his leadership in the American Zionist movement. He was the first Jewish member of the Court. Justice Brandeis remained on the court until 1939. When the new Supreme Court building opened in 1935, Justice Brandeis refused to move into his new chambers, saying that the courtroom in the Capitol was more symbolic of smaller government.

The book was part of a series by Oxford University Press intended to provide people with an introduction to areas of interest. Mr. Ritchie's book gives a history and background on how Congress works. He has been the Senate historian for one year. Prior to that, he was associate historian of the Senate since 1976.
