Federal Trade Commission Holds Summit on Robocalls

The Federal Trade Commission heard from experts on telephonic technology and the law on the current state of robocall technology and potential solutions to the problem of illegal calls.

The summit began with an evaluation of the current technology available and how entities are using it, and was followed by a discussion on current and proposed changes in laws governing the use of robocalls.

Steven M. Bellovin, Chief Technology Officer, Federal Trade Commission, and Henning Schulzrinne, Chief Technology Officer, Federal Communications Commission lead off with a discussion on the current state of robocalls.

A second panel featured leaders from industry groups and businesses using the robocall technologies. Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller joined Will Maxson, the program manager for Do Not Call Enforcement at the FTC, and Eric Bash, asssociate chief of the FCC Enforcement Bureau, for a discussion on where the law stands today and where it needs to go to further protect consumers, while allowing businesses to make legitimate use of the technology.
