He became president in 1945 after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was elected In 1948, defeating Thomas Dewey in a race many thought he wouldn't win.

Actor Sam Waterston will recite Abraham Lincoln’s inaugural address to mark the 150th anniversary of his swearing-in as President of the United States on March 4, 1861. The oath of office will be re-enacted and Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer will deliver remarks. As was the sequence in 1861, the swearing-in follows the reading of the inaugural address.

Fifty years ago on June 26, 1963, President John F. Kennedy spoke in Berlin on the differences between free and Communist systems, famously stating that as a free man he took pride in the words “Ich bin ein Berliner.”
