The Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee today said he is meeting with Speaker Boehner to urge passage of a bill to fund the government for the rest of the year, including new spending for the Defense Department.
Chairman Harold Rogers spoke at a Defense Appropriations Subcommittee hearing with the heads of the military. They described the expected impact of automatic budget cuts that begin taking effect on Friday known as sequestration.
One of the witnesses, Gen. Raymond T. Odierno, chief of staff, U.S. Army, outlined cuts to some programs, including child care and spouse employment services. "We have no choice," he told the Subcmte. members.
The law would require the Pentagon to absorb $46 billion in across-the-board cuts through the end of the fiscal year.
