Laura Bush Addresses AIDS 2012 Conference

Washington, DC
Thursday, July 26, 2012

The International AIDS Conference moves into its sixth day. Issues being covered Thursday include leadership in the HIV response for women.

Thursday's speakers include: former First Lady Laura Bush and Malawi President Joyce Banda.

A pre-taped video address from Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was shown. The opposition leader, recently released from house-arrest and elected to parliament, needed to be back in her own country for a session of parliament on Thursday.

The five-day conference presents new scientific knowledge and discussion on the major issues facing the global response to HIV.

It’s the first time the biennial event has been held in the United States since a 1993 travel-ban that prohibited those with HIV from entering the United States was lifted in 2010.

According to the United Nations, 34 million people live with HIV-AIDS, and 1.7 million died from the disease in 2011.
