Lawmakers Hold Hearing on Chinese Activist Chen Guangcheng

Washington, DC
Tuesday, May 15, 2012

A House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee held a hearing on Chinese civil rights activist Chen Guangcheng. Lawmakers heard testimony from witnesses on human rights abuses in China and the ongoing developments in Chen Guancheng's case

After witness testimony, Chen called in by speaker phone to update members on his situation and on the violent treatment of his family and supporters. He added that Chinese authorities are “in total violation of the law” and that he doesn’t consider himself a hero but said he is doing what “his conscience is telling him to do.”

Earlier this month, he made unplanned remarks via speaker phone when the Congressional-Executive Commission on China held an emergency hearing on recent developments in his case. Watch a C-SPAN clip of the phone conversation HERE.

Chen Guangcheng is a self-trained legal advocate who was imprisoned by the Chinese government, fled to the U.S. Embassy in Beijing in April and is currently awaiting the completion of paperwork before he travels to the United States.
