On November 22nd, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, propelling his vice president, Lyndon Johnson, into the presidency. In December 2013, C-SPAN3’s American History TV will air oral histories from those closest to LBJ. We begin with Liz Carpenter, who served as Johnson’s executive assistant when he was Vice President and who was later named press secretary and staff director to Lady Bird Johnson. In this interview, Carpenter recalls her time with the Johnsons – including LBJs love of gadgets, campaigning, and his advocacy for women in the workplace. This interview was conducted by the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library.
