President Obama Meets With Afghan President Karzai

Washington, DC
Friday, January 11, 2013

Afghan President Hamid Karzai is in Washington this week. On Friday, he met with President Obama at the White House to discuss the status of Afghanistan after U.S. and coalition forces leave in 2014.

Later in a joint news conference held by the two leaders, President Obama said that U.S. forces in Afghanistan will transition to a supporting role starting this spring, but that no final decision has been made about the pace of troop withdrawals.

News reports have stated that the Obama administration would like to limit the number of troops left behind in advisory roles, but any troop level would need to be approved by both leaders in a joint status of forces agreement.

While in Washington, President Karzai met with U.S. Senators and military leaders. Later on Friday, he gives a speech to students at Georgetown University.
