Sec. of State Kerry Gives First Policy Speech at UVA

Secretary of State John Kerry made his first public remarks regarding U.S. foreign policy and diplomacy Wednesday to students and faculty at the University of Virginia.

Sec. Kerry’s remarks were the first in a series of domestic addresses he plans to deliver as secretary to inform the American people about his discussions abroad and their impacts back home.

According to the University, Kerry selected the University because "U.Va. founder Thomas Jefferson served as the country’s first Secretary of State."

President Obama nominated the long-time senator to be Secretary of State on December 21, 2012.  The U.S. Senate confirmed Kerry on January 29 and he assumed the office on February 1, 2013.

Perry”, a federal challenge to the 2008 amendment to the California constitution known as Prop 8, which eliminated the  right of same-sex couples to marry in California.  And on March 27: “ United States v. Windsor, “ a challenge to “ DOMA”, the 1996 Defense of Marriage act, which defines marriage for all federal purposes as the union of one man and one woman.
