The Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Personnel holds a hearing on Sexual Assault in the Military, including testimony from victims and military officials.
According to the committee, "in 2011, more than 3,000 military sexual assaults were reported, but the Department of Defense’s own estimates put the actual number of incidents closer to 19,000. Currently, the service branches have varied policies when it comes to processing and punishing a convicted sex offender."
High profile accounts of military sexual assault have emerged in the past year, including reports of assaults and harassment at an Air Force training facility in Texas.
Sen. Kristen Gillibrand (D-NY) chairs the subcommittee.
