The Senate Finance Committee voted 19-5 to approve Jack Lew’s nomination to be Treasury Secretary Tuesday, setting up a Senate floor vote in the next few days. Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA)  was among the five Republicans Senators who opposed the president’s nominee, citing Mr. Lew’s years at Citigroup as the reason.

The Senate passed H.R. 152, the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act on Monday by a vote of 62 to 36. The bill, which passed the House earlier this month, provides $50.7 billion in aid to states affected by Superstorm Sandy.

A group of conservative Republicans held a meeting with the press called “Conversations with Conservatives.” It focused on the House floor vote on raising the debt ceiling scheduled for Wednesday. Representatives Schweikert, Labrador, Duncan and Massie gave tentative support for a Republican plan that raises the debt ceiling until May, but calls for a Senate budget and balanced budget in 10 years. Schweikert said they will trust the Republican leadership but warned that if they fail, “there would be hell to pay.”
