Senate Hearing Examines Federal Government's Foreign Language Skills

A Senate Homeland Security Subcommittee holds a hearing on the shortage of foreign language speakers in the federal government.

Officials from the FBI, the Defense & State Departments, as well as the Department of Education testified at the Subcommittee hearing.

They reviewed the federal government’s foreign language capabilities, how deficiencies impact national security and ways to improve the problem.

Members of the Senate Republican and Democratic leadership spoke to reporters following the weekly the Senate party caucus meetings.  Recently, the Senate Foreign Relations committee approved the nomination of Senator John Kerry to be Secretary of State. The full Senate is expected to hold the confirmation vote on Kerry’s nomination later this afternoon. 

Senate Passes $50+ Billion Superstorm Sandy Bill

The Senate passed H.R. 152, the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act on Monday by a vote of 62 to 36. The bill, which passed the House earlier this month, provides $50.7 billion in aid to states affected by Superstorm Sandy.

House Conservatives Discuss Agenda for 113th Congress

A group of conservative Republicans held a meeting with the press called “Conversations with Conservatives.” It focused on the House floor vote on raising the debt ceiling scheduled for Wednesday. Representatives Schweikert, Labrador, Duncan and Massie gave tentative support for a Republican plan that raises the debt ceiling until May, but calls for a Senate budget and balanced budget in 10 years. Schweikert said they will trust the Republican leadership but warned that if they fail, “there would be hell to pay.”  

EMILY's List Inauguration Brunch

Joint Session of Congress Formally Certifies Pres. Obama's Re-Election

On Friday, a Joint Session of Congress convened to count the electoral votes. President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden each received 332 electoral votes and were officially re-elected to office.

Senate Convenes First Session of the 113th Congress

The Senate convened its first session on the 113th Congress on Thursday. Incoming Senate freshmen, along with Senators re-elected in the 2012 election, were sworn in to office.
