The Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on African Affairs holds a hearing to assess recent developments in Mali, including a military coup and northern rebellion in early 2012 and security issues that resulted in Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb taking over an area in northern Mali.
The hearing looks at how the U.S. is addressing the security, political and humanitarian crises and considering the best path forward for the international community.
Witnesses included: Johnnie Carson, assistant secretary of State for African affairs; Earl Gast, assistant administrator for Africa at the U.S. Agency for International Development; and Amanda Dory, deputy assistant secretary of Defense for Africa, in addition to other researchers and experts.
Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) chaired the hearing.
