On April 30th, 1803, the United States and France concluded negotiations on the Louisiana Purchase. The acquisition of the Louisiana Territory by the United States increased the westward reach of the nation by some 828,000 square miles.
University of Connecticut Geography Professor John Allen talks about the role Thomas Jefferson played in the Louisiana Purchase and the expedition of Lewis and Clark who were sent by President Jefferson to explore and map the new territory.
