Monday, January 17th marks the 50th Anniversary of President Dwight Eisenhower’s Farewell Address in which he spoke to Americans about the “Military-Industrial Complex.” The Cato Institute hosted a discussion about that speech and whether the former president's warnings have been heeded. In the first portion, you hear from President Eisenhower's granddaughter Susan Eisenhower. After her remarks, a panel of former government officials looks at relations between the civilian sector and the military, and how that’s changed since President Eisenhower’s time.

Following the German World War Two surrender, then-General Dwight D-Eisenhower witnessed firsthand the horrific scenes of the Holocaust.  Eisenhower understood that it was necessary to document with visual evidence the atrocities witnessed at concentration camps and foresaw the era of Holocaust denial. The Eisenhower Library presented a program on this topic with law professor Harry Reicher.

The Eisenhower Institute at Gettysburg College commemorated the 50th anniversary of Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev meeting with President Dwight Eisenhower at his farm in Gettysburg.

Susan Eisenhower and Sergei Khrushchev held a discussion moderated by Daun van Ee, co-editor of the Eisenhower Papers. They spoke about their memories of the visit and the political implications. They also responded to questions from members of the audience.

Dwight Eisenhower served a long military career before being elected the nation's 34th president in 1952. "The Dwight D. Eisenhower Story" was a 1953 episode of The Big Picture series produced by the Army Pictorial Center, and tells the story of Eisenhower's life before becoming president. In this conversation at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library, David and Julie Eisenhower -- the grandson and daughter of presidents -- recall Dwight D. Eisenhower's presidency and later retirement in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and the relationship between Ike and his vice president, Richard Nixon. Julie Nixon Eisenhower also explains why her father, Richard Nixon, made another run at the presidency after his close loss to John F. Kennedy in 1960.

This program was produced by the Republican National Committee in support of Dwight Eisenhower’s 1952 presidential campaign, and aired on national TV the evening before Election Day. Dwight Eisenhower went on to defeat Democratic candidate Adlai Stevenson that year.
