70 years ago, on July 30th, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed legislation creating a World War II emergency service program for women known by the acronym WAVES. By the end of the war over 84 thousand women had served in the WAVES program, part of the U.S. Navy, in nursing and secretarial jobs, but also as mechanics and officers. This is a 1950s Defense Department film titled, "The Price of Liberty" which highlights the contributions of women in America's Armed Forces.
