Book Discussion on Hallowed Ground: A Walk at Gettysburg
Professor McPherson discussed his latest book, Hallowed Ground: A Walk at Gettysburg, published by Crown Publishers. In the book, the author reenacts the Battle of Gettysburg for readers by leading them on a tour of the battlefield, emulating the original sequence of the skirmishes and showing the importance of the terrain to the battle. Beginning with the opening clash on July 1, 1863, he describes where and how each segment of the battle took place, while pointing out specific locations of statues, monuments or markers and explaining their significance. The book ends with Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and three maps that detail the major locations and movements of troops during the combat. Following his presentation, Mr. McPherson answered questions from members of the audience.629 views
