    A panel of advocates and a panel of Justice Department officials testified on the effectiveness of the federal prison system. The first group of witnesses, which included Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison author Piper Kerman, described their experiences both in and out of the system, and the work they were doing to assist those still incarcerated or in the re-entry process. Witnesses in the second panel talked about the challenges they were addressing in a system that, by their own accounts, continues to be stretched beyond its capacity.

    Foster Care Issues

    Witnesses that included a parent advocate, a former foster child, and two state-level child welfare officials testified on ways the federal government can reduce the number of children who end up in group foster care homes. Officials from Oregon and Utah talked about ways their states were using federal waivers to find better solutions for potential foster children. Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Ron Wyden (D-OR), the Finance Committee chair and ranking member, said the panelists' testimony would be used to craft future legislation encouraging foster care alternatives.

    2016 Republican Candidates "Voters First Forum"

    All 16 currently filed Republican presidential candidates were invited to take part in a “Voters First Republican Presidential Forum” on the campus of St. Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire. This event was the first opportunity to hear all of the 2016 Republican presidential candidates on one stage. The candidates appeared one at a time, answering questions determined by the editors of the New Hampshire Union Leader based on the topics suggested by the public, with immigration and the economy topping the list. Senators Cruz (R-TX), Paul (R-KY), and Rubio (R-FL) appeared via video link from Washington, D.C.
