Union Army and the Reelection of Abraham Lincoln
Jonathan White talked about the Union Army’s attitudes toward the policies of Abraham Lincoln and the Republican party in the 1864 elections. Professor White argued that many Northern soldiers joined the army in support of the Union, not necessarily in support of abolition. He explained how many troops had to be coerced into supporting the Republican president as he challenged the Democratic Party’s pro-slavery candidate. Ultimately, President Lincoln earned 80 percent of the soldiers' votes.260 views
