New CBO Report Offers Mixed Picture of the Deficit, Economy

The CBO's new Budget and Economic Outlook, released on Tuesday, January 31, shows a small improvement in the deficit but rising unemployment. The report projects a $1.1 trillion federal budget deficit for FY 2012, or a 7 percent drop from last year. However, it also projects unemployment to rise to 8.9 percent in 2012. CBO Director Douglas W. Elmendorf took questions during a briefing following the outlook release.
White House Press Briefing on the Keystone XL Decision

On Wednesday, January 18, the State Department announced it would not allow the proposed construction of the Keystone XL pipeline to move forward. The $7 billion pipeline would carry oil through six states from Canada to oil refineries on the Gulf Coast. White House Spokesman Jay Carney told reporters that "imposing an arbitrary 60-day deadline on this process would make it virtually impossible for an adequate review to take place." Congress voted late last year to require the administration to make a decision by late February about whether to allow the pipeline to proceed as planned.

Supreme Court Releases Arguments in FCC v Fox Television

The U.S. Supreme Court released the oral argument in FOX Television v FCC, a broadcast decency case. The high court met on Tuesday, Jan. 10, to review a 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals decision that found the FCC's indecency rules unconstitutionally vague. The case stems from the use of expletives by actresses Cher and Nicole Richie during the 2002 Billboard Music Awards, which aired on Fox.
