On Wednesday, January 18, the State Department announced it would not allow the proposed construction of the Keystone XL pipeline to move forward. The $7 billion pipeline would carry oil through six states from Canada to oil refineries on the Gulf Coast. White House Spokesman Jay Carney told reporters that "imposing an arbitrary 60-day deadline on this process would make it virtually impossible for an adequate review to take place." Congress voted late last year to require the administration to make a decision by late February about whether to allow the pipeline to proceed as planned.
Supreme Court Releases Arguments in FCC v Fox Television

The U.S. Supreme Court released the oral argument in FOX Television v FCC, a broadcast decency case. The high court met on Tuesday, Jan. 10, to review a 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals decision that found the FCC's indecency rules unconstitutionally vague. The case stems from the use of expletives by actresses Cher and Nicole Richie during the 2002 Billboard Music Awards, which aired on Fox.
Rep. Giffords Attends Candlelight Vigil on Shooting Anniversary

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) returns to Tucson, AZ, one year after the January 8, 2011 shooting in which she was critically wounded and six people were killed. Rep. Giffords attends an anniversary vigil at the University of Arizona. Sunday's vigil was one of several events held in Tucson to observe the tragedy in which 19 people were shot last year at a Giffords "Congress On Your Corner" event which took place at a shopping center in Northwest Tucson.
