It is estimated that in 1739, Venture Smith was captured in West Africa and taken to New England where he would spend the next 25-years as a slave. He purchased his freedom in 1765 and would become a property owner and successful businessman. A conference about his life was held recently in Hartford, Connecticut.

A photograph of Elvis Presley meeting Richard Nixon at the White House is the single most requested photo from the National Archives. To commemorate Presley’s 75th birthday, a discussion about the infamous event was held recently by two who were present almost forty-years ago.
