George Washington University Discussion on Fighting Corruption in Wars in Iraq & Afghanistan

Stuart Bowen, Special Inspector General of the Iraq Reconstruction Management Office and Army Consultant Stephen Biddle talked about corruption in Iraq and Afghanistan. Bowen, who served as the CPA-IG since January 20, 2004, continues as the special inspector general for Iraq Reconstruction. Steve Biddle was an adviser to General Petraeus in Iraq and continues to serve in that capacity in Afghanistan. “Fighting Corruption in the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan” was a Security Policy Forum of the Elliott School of International Affairs. Iraq Change of Command Ceremony with Vice Pres. Joe Biden

Vice President Joe Biden participated in a change of command ceremony as part of the last phase in the U.S. military handover to the Iraqi military, which is being called “Operation New Dawn." During the ceremony, the vice president said the transfer of authority from Defense to the State Department symbolizes a "different chapter in the relationship with Iraq." Presidential Address On U.S. Combat Troop Withdrawal From Iraq

In his speech from the Oval Office, President Obama announced the end of combat operations in Iraq. He spoke about the significance of the transition, challenges that would remain for Iraqi and U.S. security & the nature of the new U.S. commitments to Iraq. The President also praised the military personnel who had both served and died during the war. His statements were followed by his announcement of the final date for complete troop withdrawal in 2010. The American Legion held its annual national convention, which coincides with the formal drawdown of U.S. troops in Iraq. House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) gave an address criticizing the president's policies and thanking the troops for their service in Iraq. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki gave remarks on the Obama administration's response to national security issues and its future involvement in Iraq. Center For A New American Security Discussion on the U.S. Relationship with Iraq

State Department officials assigned to Iraq discussed efforts to stabilize the government before the end of the U-S troop withdrawal. Talks between the leaders of the two major political parties in that country were recently put on hold. Iraq has yet to form a new government following national elections in March. Officials from Kurdistan’s semi-autonomous regional government talked about the future of Iraq at the Atlantic Council. Topics included the March 2010 election in Iraq, which failed to produce a clear winner, and the ongoing negotiations on the make up of a new Iraqi government. Other issues included the sharing of oil revenues in Iraq and what a drawdown of U.S. troops means for Kurdish security. More »
