The President marked the 10,000th road project funded by Recovery Act in Columbus, Ohio. According to the White House, this road improvement project in downtown Columbus is expected to create over 300 construction jobs. This event was part of the Administration’s “Recovery Summer” effort, a six-week-long focus on new stimulus infrastructure projects that will be underway nationwide in the coming months. House Minority Leader John Boehner said the President to came to Ohio to “tout a ‘stimulus’ that is failing to meet his promises by every reasonable standard.”

CBO Director Peter Orszag applauded the federal government’s implementation of the Recovery Act and credited Vice President Joe Biden as the driving force behind the effort. Making the case that the stimulus has helped to revive economic growth, Orszag cited the “the largest one-year swing in GDP growth in three decades” from an average GDP decline of 5.9 percent at the end of 2008 to 4.3 percent a year later.

In a newly released report, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) attributed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act with creating or saving up to 2.8 million jobs this year. The report also noted that without the stimulus measure, the unemployment rate could be as high as 11 percent. Vice President Joe Biden said the report “is further confirmation that the Recovery Act is a driving force behind recent economic growth.”
