House Oversight Hearing on Economic Stimulus Spending

Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-NY) chaired a House Oversight & Govt. Reform Cmte. hearing on tracking the use of funds in the 787 billion dollar economic stimulus package. The Government Accountability Office released its first official report on stimulus fund tracking at this hearing.

John Powell, Ohio State University's Kirwan Inst. for the Study of Race & Ethnicity John Powell goes over new research from the Kirwan Institute, which suggests that stimulus money spent on job recovery has not produced significant amount of employment for minorities in affected populations. The study also suggests more effort should be made toward minority owned businesses and areas of the country hardest hit by the financial crisis.

The $787 Billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) was signed into law by President Obama on February 17th, 2009. Known as the economic stimulus law, it was passed to jumpstart the U.S. economy as well as to save and create more than 3.5 million jobs over the next two years.

Recovery Progress Report:
As of March 9, $349.2 billion of the $787 billion stimulus has been committed to states; $198.1 billion has been paid out.
