U.S. SUPREME COURT AGREES TO C-SPAN'S REQUEST FOR SAME-DAY RELEASE OF ORAL ARGUMENTS IN UPCOMING ABORTION CASES

Chief Justice Roberts Continues Same-Day Oral Argument Releases with Gonzalez v. Planned Parenthood & Gonzalez v. Carhart

WASHINGTON (November 2, 2006) - On Wednesday, November 8, at 12:30 p.m. ET, C-SPAN Radio and c-span.org will air the Supreme Court oral arguments of Gonzalez v. Planned Parenthood and Gonzalez v. Carhart that the Court is scheduled to hear earlier that day. The same-day release of the audio recordings was in response to a written request from C-SPAN.

Both cases address the constitutionality of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003, and hinge on whether health risks alone should guarantee a woman access to a controversial late term abortion. The recordings will be made available to the media and air on C-SPAN Radio and online at www.c-span.org as the court releases the audio, generally 15 to 30 minutes after the argument's conclusion. C-SPAN will also air the oral arguments of these abortion cases during its weekly series, "America and the Courts," on Saturday, November 11 at 7 p.m. ET

C-SPAN regularly makes requests to the Supreme Court for the same-day release of oral argument recordings that meet the court's standard for heightened public interest. The last time the court released same-day oral arguments was in the case of Hamdan v. Rumsfeld in March.

For nearly 20 years, C-SPAN has supported initiatives that increase and encourage greater public access to the court. A new C-SPAN Web site launched today, www.c-span.org/about/camerasinthecourt, chronicles C-SPAN's early involvement in the issue and features a collection of public statements made by the Justices regarding cameras in the court.

C-SPAN Radio is heard nationally on Sirius Satellite and XM Satellite Radio and in the Washington, D.C./Baltimore area at 90.1 WCSP-FM. The audio recordings will also be archived online at www.c-span.org on the "America and the Courts" page.

C-SPAN, the political network of record, was created as a public service in 1979 by America's cable companies. C-SPAN is currently available in 90.7 million households, C-SPAN2 in 82.1 million households, and C-SPAN3 in more than 12.2 million households nationwide.
