SUPREME COURT AGREES TO C-SPAN’S REQUEST FOR SAME-DAY RELEASE OF ORAL ARGUMENTS

Hamdan v. Rumsfeld Marks 2nd Oral Argument Release During Chief Justice Roberts Tenure

WASHINGTON, D.C., (March 24, 2006) - On Tuesday, March 28 at 12:30 p.m. ET, C-SPAN3, C-SPAN Radio and c-span.org will air the Supreme Court oral argument of Hamdan v. Rumsfeld that the Court will hear earlier that day. The same-day release of the audio recordings was in response to a written request from C-SPAN.

The case will decide the constitutionality of using military commissions to try al Qaeda leaders accused of war crimes. The recording will be made available to the media and aired on the C-SPAN networks as soon as it becomes available, generally 15 - 30 minutes after the argument’s conclusion.

C-SPAN has requested the same-day release of oral argument recordings for three cases of heightened public interest since Chief Justice John Roberts joined the Court in September 2005. Hamdan v. Rumsfeld marks the second time the Roberts Court has granted the early release of arguments. The Court declined early release for the recent Texas redistricting case.

C-SPAN, the political network of record, was created in 1979 by America's cable companies as a public service. C-SPAN is currently available in 89.1 million households, C-SPAN2 in 77 million households, and C-SPAN3 in more than 11 million households nationwide. EDITOR’S NOTE: The argument will be archived online at C-SPAN’s Supreme Court Web site. Click on “Supreme Court” under Featured Topics to access the page.
