SUPREME COURT AGREES TO C-SPAN'S REQUEST FOR SAME-DAY RELEASE OF ARGUMENTS IN TWO UPCOMING CASES

WASHINGTON (November 18, 2005) - In response to a request from C-SPAN, the Supreme Court has agreed to the same-day release of audio recordings of oral arguments in two upcoming cases of particular national interest.

In a letter dated November 9, 2005 and addressed to Chief Justice John Roberts, C-SPAN requested early release of audio in the following cases:
  • Ayotte v. Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, Wednesday, November 30 (abortion case)
  • Rumsfeld v. Forum for Academic & Institutional Rights, Tuesday, December 6 (military recruitment case)
The oral arguments will air on one of the C-SPAN networks, www.c-span.org and C-SPAN Radio shortly after the conclusion of each argument.

Former Chief Justice Rehnquist granted C-SPAN's request nine times since 2000. C-SPAN has been the requesting media organization in each of these cases and has aired the arguments in their entirety. Typically, the court releases audio recordings of all its arguments at the conclusion of a term.

C-SPAN, the political network of record, was created in 1979 by America's cable companies as a public service. C-SPAN is currently available in 89.4 million households, C-SPAN2 in 77.5 million households, and C-SPAN3 in more than 11.1 million households nationwide.
