BUS VISIT IDEAS

Following are some ideas for ways to get the most out of your C-SPAN School Bus visit:

  • Use the C-SPAN School Bus to promote Cable in the Classroom in your service area or include the bus in a workshop for educators and media specialists. Invite members of the educational community -- including college students and faculty -- to tour the Bus and learn how to use cable and C-SPAN programming in the classroom. Also target local officials, school administrators, and school board staff.

  • Highlight your systems' commitment to education and public service in your community by hosting a reception for local VIPs centered around the C-SPAN School Bus visit. Tie the Bus visit into a community-wide event such as a fair or parade and invite local officials and members of the community to tour the Bus.

  • Partner with a local bookstore or library to offer a tie-in promotion to BOOK TV on C-SPAN 2. This is a great way to get free publicity. Target public officials, community members and teachers for Bus tours.

  • Offer a tie-in promotion with a local museum/historic site. Museums and historic sites are a natural fit with C-SPAN's public affairs programming. Many museums have established memberships and partnerships with local groups that you could invite to tour the Bus as well as the site.

  • Target senior centers. Many senior centers have large, active communities that are free to attend events during the day. This audience tends to be well read, active and engaged in issues.

  • Work with television production studios or media centers in your local schools and arrange for students, teachers and local VIPs to tour the Bus. Target TV production, journalism, or communications students and focus the presentation on new technology and critical viewing of television.

  • Use the Bus as a production facility. To assist in your outreach efforts, invite your local origination crew to the Bus to tape a segment about the visit. Interview key public officials in your area using the Bus as a backdrop or studio. Invite a television production class from one of your local schools to tape a segment about your system and the Bus visit.

  • Park the Bus at City Hall or any other municipal building and invite students and teachers to tour both the Bus and the building. This allows students to learn about their state and local officials as well as national public affairs. Designate a time slot to open the Bus to the public for tours.

  • Park the Bus at your system. Invite system employees and customers to tour the Bus to gain a better understanding of the C-SPAN Networks' unique brand of public affairs programming and your commitment to providing C-SPAN as a public service to your viewers.

  • Customize your Web page to highlight the visit and provide links to www.c-span.org
