C-SPAN's Steve Scully Teaches Distance Learning Class To Denver University Students Via Satellite
Class Features Key Former White House Officials and Politicians As Speakers

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- February 12, 2003 -- C-SPAN, The Cable Center, and the University of Denver are working together, through funding provided by Amos B. Hostetter, to redefine distance learning. Political Editor & Hostetter Chair of Communication Steve Scully instructs a course from Washington, D.C. to students at the University of Denver who are located in The Cable Center's Distance Learning Studio on the DU campus. The course, titled "Television and the Modern Presidency", examines theories, assumptions, and philosophies about the use of television in political campaigns and the presidency. The 14-week, two hour class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3 p.m. Eastern Time.

Because of the advantage of teaching from Washington, D.C., the course provides important guests who can field questions live to students in Denver over 1,500 miles away.

On Thursday Feb. 13, Senior White House Correspondent for Fox News Channel Jim Angle was the guest for Scully's class.

With the extensive C-SPAN archive of political campaign footage, Scully uses sound and video excerpts to demonstrate 25 years of political history and allow guests to comment. Satellite and high-speed fiber lines connect 25 students in Colorado with Scully in C-SPAN's Washington, D.C. studio. Cameras canvas the classroom at The Cable Center while microphones record each student's comments. At C-SPAN in Washington, Scully monitors a TV transmitting video and audio of the students. His image and instruction are broadcast through a television at the front of the classroom in Colorado. With this robust and reliable link between the public affairs cable network and the distance learning laboratory, the course provides an interactive, two-way experience - with students and educator sharing words, expressions and body language.

Upcoming guests include:
  • Thur., Feb. 13 - Jim Angle - Senior White House Correspondent - Fox News Channel
  • Tue., Feb. 18 - Paul Duke - fmr. Moderator, Washington Week in Review - PBS, & Howard Kurtz - Host of CNN's weekly program, "Reliable Resources and is the media reporter for The Washington Post
