PEARL HARBOR INTERVIEWS

Early on the morning of December 7, 1941, Japanese submarines and carrier-based planes attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, the Hawaiian site of one of the principal naval bases of the United States. Nearby military airfields also came under fire. Eight American battleships and 13 other naval vessels were sunk or badly damaged, roughly 300 American aircraft were destroyed or incapacitated, and 2,390 Americans -- both military personnel and civilians -- were killed. The surprise attack came after 10 years of worsening relations between Japan and the United States, and marked the entrance of the United States into World War II. This week, we'll hear recordings from a National Park Service oral history project being conducted with Pearl Harbor veterans and survivors.
