Rules Committee Sends Lawsuit Against President Obama to House

The House Rules Committee has passed and ordered H.Res. 676 reported favorably to the full House. The resolution would authorize a suit against the president for what Republicans have called an overreach of executive power.

The suit would accuse the president of circumventing the health care overhaul law he championed by authorizing waivers for certain employer requirements.

The Rules panel held a hearing on the lawsuit earlier this month.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) downplayed the seriousness of the suit in a recent press briefing, saying it was totally irresponsible. "They're not effective legislators. They're changing the subject all the time."

President Obama spoke about his use of executive action and responded to House Republicans in a speech delivered earlier this month in Austin, Texas.
