Susan Dunn, discusses her book that she co-authored with James MacGregor Burns, The Three Roosevelts: Patrician Leaders Who Transformed America.

This lesson plan can be used to reflect upon the life and writings of Franklin Delano, Theodore, and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Before Viewing Booknotes

Step One: Research
Have students research biographical information about the three Roosevelts discussed in the book. What was the social climate of the United States during this time in their lives? Have students research World War I, the Great Depression, and the Jim Crow era.

Step Two: Media & the Presidency
How has the media affected the lives of modern presidents? What impact does media coverage of presidents have on public perceptions?

Discussion

Ask the students to discuss the authors' opinion of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's attitude toward wealth. Does the author feel that inherited wealth is inconsistent with a democratic society? Do students think that inherited wealth is as large an advantage as it was in the time of Franklin Roosevelt?

Activity

Have students draft a "modern New Deal" based on Franklin Roosevelt's concept. How would these programs benefit today's society? Have students present their ideas to the class.
