BOOKNOTES Teacher Guide
Bernard Lewis, discusses his book What Went Wrong: Western Impact and Middle Eastern Response.

This lesson plan can be used to examine the Middle East region and the Islamic religion.


Before Viewing Booknotes

Step One: Research
Have students do some preliminary research on the Middle East. Have students research the following topics:
  • What countries comprise this region?
  • What languages are spoken?
  • What is the predominant religion of the region?
  • What are the landscapes like?

Step Two: Discussion
Ask students what they know or belive about the Middle East. What do they know about Islam? Do they have preconceived ideas about people who live in the Middle East? If so, what do they think?

Directions: Answer the questions below with information from the Booknotes program.

  1. What is the point of the book?

  2. Why is the Mr. Lewis interested in Middle Eastern studies?

  3. Does the author believe that you can look at the Middle East from any one political perspective?

  4. How does the author feel about the way that people in America view history?

  5. What event happened 80 years ago? Why does the Mr. Lewis believe it is significant?

  6. What does the author say about the Prophet Mohammed?

  7. What does the author say about the impact that oil has had on the Middle East?

  8. Who were "The Assasins?"

  9. What does the Mr. Lewis mean when he says "get tough or get out?"

  10. How does the author respond to the media's coverage of the events of Sept. 11? What form of media does the author prefer?

  11. What does Mr. Lewis say about the treatment of women in the Middle East?

After Viewing Booknotes

Discussion
Have students discuss the questions from the section above. Have their impressions about the Middle East region changed by watching this program? If so, how?

Activity
Have students pick a country in the Middle East that they would like to know more about. Have them research some topics as population, income levels, literacy rate, religion, etc. The report should include information that is key to understanding this country's geopolitical position in the Middle East. Students should deliver their report to the class.
